In writing we will be covering various text types. These will including writing narratives (myths and legends, adventure story), poetry, non-chronological reports, newspaper reports, explanation texts, persuasive texts and diaries. Where possible we will link learning to our topics.
In reading we endeavour to cover a range of texts linked to our reading. We have a dedicated time each day for a class book which is intended to help increase children's vocabulary and comprehension skills as well as nurturing a love of reading.
In maths we follow the White Rose scheme of work which ensures that all aspects of the curriculum for maths are covered. Through our learning using pictorial representation and other tools such as numicon we hope to ensure that children become competent mathematicians and have a good knowledge of number, place value, shape and statistics.
Our topic this term is The Romans and where possible we will be linking all our learning to this. We will be looking at, among other things: Who were the Romans; Where did they come from; Roman Army; Roman Life and Architecture and discussing What the Romans did for us! In addition we will be making mosaic tiles, as well as Roman shields.
We will be joining with Year 3 on a trip to Colchester Castle - details and date to be confirmed.
Spellings will be given each week and will include the letter string we are working on as well as two of the Year 3/4 words children are required
Mathletics work will also be set along with Times Tables Rockstars each week.
In order to make good progress in reading it is extremely helpful to all children if they can read to an adult at least five times in a week (this does not have to be very long). This will help to correct any misconceptions and help with any tricky words. If they read five times they will get a class raffle ticket and go into a draw to win a prize for that week. They will also get a class raffle ticket for completing mathletics and rockstars and could win a class prize.
