Phonics is a huge part of our Year 1 curriculum.
Our lessons are guided by the phonics programme Read, Write Inc. During these lessons the children will take part in activities which will develop their reading, writing and spelling skills. They will revisit the graphemes learned in Early Years (e.g. sh/ay/ee) as well as learn new letter combinations such as ‘ur’ ‘aw’ and split diagraphs
(e.g. a_e as in snake and i_e as in slide).
Additionally in June next year the children will take part in the national Phonics Screening Check. This assessment, of 20 real words and 20 pseudo words, is designed to assess the children’s knowledge of phonics as well as their decoding and blending skills.
You can help your child to prefect their decoding and blending skills by practising words in their phonics folders. These words are a close match to those seen in a phonics screening check. Additionally they really help with their reading skills as they will become more confident in their abilities to reading and decode independently.
