At Two Village we teach the children to read using a systematic approach to phonics. We use the programme Read Write Inc. which is taught on a daily basis throughout KS1. During phonics sessions we encourage the children to actively participate by using actions to show the sounds. The children learn to read by blending the sounds together. Assessments occur regularly and children who may need extra interventions are identified.
We have group sets of reading books which support the teaching of phonics – with each set of books concentrating on one particular phoneme.
As well as teaching the decoding of words, it is important that children have a secure understanding of what they read.
We use a scheme called Book Bands for Guided Reading. This is a scheme into which books are banded by difficulty, with each band having a different coloured sticker (the colour is also indicative of the child’s NC reading level). There are a range of books in each band, e.g. different authors, genres and font types, which means the children have an element of choice over their reading and don’t become too reliant on one particular style of book. The children choose their own book from the colour band and this not only helps them to develop an enjoyment of reading but also helps them on their way to becoming independent readers.
